Winter is one of the most beautiful times of the year. The air smells of pine trees, cinnamon, cookies, cocoa and gingerbread. You may be greeted by a blanket of snow or spend the day at the beach. Families and friends spend time together and people in general tend to be more generous and giving.
Unfortunately, this time of year isn’t without its stressors. Parents are working overtime so they have enough money to buy their kids something nice, students are cramming for final exams, family gatherings may be wrought with tension, homeless families may be struggling just to find warmth and food. These are just some causes of stress during this season. Bad kinds of stress like the ones mentioned above is not healthy or enjoyable for anybody. Unfortunately, I can’t make all the struggles go away, as much as I wish I could. What I can do is create a list of activities to help relieve some tension and allow people to feel at peace, if only for a little bit. You may even get to help other people while relaxing!
- Read a novel.
- Watch a movie with the family.
- Go for a walk.
- Bake cookies.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
- Pray, meditate, do yoga.
- Color with crayons.
- Make a snowman.
- Take care of the animals at your local animal shelter.
- Invite the new neighbors over for hot cocoa.
- Read the comics from the newspaper.
- Walk your doggy.
- Go see the school play or musical.
- Write in a journal.
- Donate clothes to Goodwill.
- Cook dinner as a family.
- Listen to the rain.
- Go dancing.
Use this list as a starting point and add more activities as you think of them! I hope this blog post finds everybody well and that it helps you to relax during this very stressful time of year. Just remember, it is a truly beautiful season, too.
