Band Feature: Fitz & The Tantrums

Words by Jade Smith

The sextet, Fitz & The Tantrums, a fusion of neo soul and indie pop, has toured with a variety of acts from Maroon 5 to Flogging Molly. Fitz & The Tantrums have a sound created from blending together the best of different genres, redefining what we consider modern pop music. Hailing from Los Angeles, CA, they have since graced stages across the US and have been featured on shows such as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, and Live from Daryl’s House. Featuring co-vocalists Noelle Scaggs and Michael Fitzpatrick, the band is comprised of James King (saxophone and flute), Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards), Joseph Karnes (bass) and John Wicks (drums).

Founded by Fitzpatrick back in 2008, the band manages to package the sweet melodies of rock, pop, and R&B all into one, killer live show. Their discography includes their debut EP, Songs from a Breakup, Vol. 1, and their critically-acclaimed album, Pickin’ Up the Pieces, which featured hits like “Don’t Gotta Work it Out” and “Money Grabber”. After playing Lollapalooza in 2011, they began work on their newest album, More than Just a Dream, finishing 30 songs in merely two months time.

For the album, they brought in the special talents of producer Tony Hoffer, the man behind hits from Beck and M83. Fitzgerald or “Fitz” was also able to lend his own audio engineering skills to create the album’s distinct sound. Released just a few months ago in May, the album’s single, “Out of My League” has since placed on the Billboard 200 charts. The band is finishing up the Moonshine Jungle tour with Bruno Mars, making a brief stop in Philly at the Made in America festival, before jumping right back on the road again with Capital Cities on The Bright Futures tour. Be sure to catch them on The Bright Futures tour this fall in your area.
