What We’re Listening To: October

October means saying goodbye to the sun filled long days and hello to jackets, scarves and pumpkin spice lattes. A new season means a new playlist is definitely needed. Two of our writers have listed the songs they think are perfect for everything the autumn will bring.

Cassie Burke’s Playlist:

Icona Pop- All Night

Icona Pop’s new album, ‘This is…Icona Pop,” releases this week. The record’s lead single, ‘All Night’ is a feel-good party anthem. It’s not a surprising track from the Swedish duo, but it’s a good taste of what the high-energy debut album has to offer. Check out the official extended music video for the track, which gives a positive documentary-style insight into New York drag queen nightlife.

Lorde- Royals

Nearly 17 and preparing to release her debut album ‘Pure Heroine’ next month Ella Yellich-O’Connor AKA is working her way up the iTunes charts with a single from the upcoming record. Royals, is an electro-pop track with a finger-snapping rhythm and subtle underlying synths. Also, check out ‘Tennis Court,’ I can’t decide whether it’s a guilty pleasure or just a pleasure—you decide.

Panic! At the Disco- Miss Jackson (Feat. Lolo)

Also releasing next month ‘Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die,’ Panic! At the Disco’s first album since ‘Vices & Virtues’ which released in 2011. Miss Jackson, the lead single, is a high energy pop song and I dare you not to sing along with it. Known for drastically changing their tone between albums, P!ATD’s return keeps us on our toes, especially if the rest of the album sounds like this.

NGHBRS- Hold Up Girl

This month NGHBRS premiered their DIY music video for ‘Hold Up Girl,’ a single off their debut LP which released last July. It’s a catchy, simple, and happy rock tune which more than deserves a place on this list. The music video is a clever video featuring Instagram, and the Wall Street Journal compared it to OK Go’s viral DIY treadmill music video.

Birdy- Fire Within (Album)

Known for her YouTube covers of indie folk band’s like Fleet Foxes, and more notably Bon Iver, 17 year old Jasmine van den Bogaerde has released her 2nd studio album, ‘Fire Within.’ The record follows her eponymous album of covers, and features mostly her own songwriting. The piano-ballad heavy album heads in a fragile folk-rock direction, and being her first attempt at writing her own songs, it’s really quite decent.
