It’s hard to ignore a band that has had such a strong beginning, and The Paper Kites have had quick success in the few short years they have been a band. The Paper Kites are an indie folk band from Melbourne, Australia consisting of members Sam Bentley, Christina Lacy, Dave Powys, Josh Bentley, and Sam Rasmussen. Since forming in 2010, they’ve gone on to sell out iconic venues in their home country of Australia, toured North America with City and Colour, and had their song “Featherstone” featured on Grey’s Anatomy. After releasing two EPs, they premiered their debut full-length “States” last year. Their sound is characterized by whimsical melodies, fingerstyle guitars, and the charming vocal harmonies of Bentley and Lacy. Their music is both warm and refreshing and is reminiscent of the aforementioned City and Colour, as well as The Lumineers. Yet there is a cinematic quality to their work that would make The Paper Kites the perfect soundtrack to both a feel-good indie film and a dramatic fantasy blockbuster. Diverse, ethereal, and cozy, The Paper Kites are definitely a band to watch out for.
