I’ve struggled with major depression since I was 6 years old, which was the first time I became suicidal. Like with any mental illness, some years were harder than others. 2010 was a particularly hard year – at 19, I had a herniated disc in my spine and was struggling with finding direction in my life as I found no sense of fulfillment from the community college I was attending or the jobs I was working at the time. So, a few days before Thanksgiving, I went with my friend to tattoo these phrases on my wrists as a reminder that it was better to choose to stay (design and slogan inspired by To Write Love On Her Arms). They have served as a source of comfort – and a reminder – ever since.
For the Love of Tattooing is a project in collaboration with Serpents of Bienville and submissions are still open. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org
